When companies convey false, misleading or unsubstantiated claims of environmental benefits or clean, green, renewable, sustainable, or non-emitting, they are considered to be engaging in greenwashing.
The Competition Act and its Draft Environmental Claims must be expanded to hold governments accountable for their role in disseminating disinformation. Transparency, accuracy, and accountability are essential in addressing the climate crisis. By ensuring that all environmental claims—whether from businesses or governments—are grounded in scientific truth, we can make informed decisions that truly benefit the planet and future generations.
It is time to stop the greenwashing and start taking meaningful action to mitigate the full scope of emissions, including those from hydroelectric power generation. Only then can we move closer to a sustainable, net-zero future.
